From the initial design concept down to final touches, Sonia believes in the uniqueness of every project and in the importance of getting to know the client so that she can clearly understand their needs while helping them further develop their vision. Sonia uses her knowledge and experience to work with consultants and engineers to orchestrate an overall design to best meet individual client needs.
Three areas of interest for Sonia are Environment & Behavior, Historic Preservation and Sustainability. She uses her interests in how our environment affects our behavior, the importance of preserving our history while making it function for today and creating a sustainable built and natural environment to help drive her designs to better the lives of her clients and end users.
Sonia also believes that architects have a larger responsibility to the community and the profession than just designing the built environment. This has led Sonia to be active in the AIA at the local level. She is currently serving on the AIA Northern Virginia Board of Directors and chaired the Interschool Design Competition at the National Building Museum in 2017 and 2018. She has also participated in both Architecture in the Schools and Canstruction® and helped initiate AIA Northern Virginia’s Women in Architecture annual clothing drive in 2011 benefiting Dress for Success, providing clothing to disadvantaged women in the area.
