Holy Martyrs of Vietnam Catholic Church

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Diocese of Arlington Arlington, Virginia   A generic 1950's era church was acquired by this predominately Vietnamese parish. In order to better suit their unique needs, the building was expanded and re-imagined with a new exterior aesthetic that draws from elements of traditional Vietnamese architecture.  Additions to the church provide a new narthex, meeting and classroom spaces.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

PEG Residence Hall

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Mary Baldwin University Staunton, Virginia   Mary Baldwin's Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG) is for students who are on an accelerated educational path -- bypassing high school and entering college between the ages of 13 - 16. PEG Residence Hall was designed to provide on-campus housing to meet these students' unique needs.   This new building provides residential and common living space for 50 students and seven adults. Organized into small clusters, each with adult supervision, GBR Architects designed an environment to simulate a home away from home for these young women. The building, situated on a steep hillside, links the campus to the street level, providing multiple connections. A separate entry for traditional students provides more flexibility in occupancy. The building forms and finishes were designed to blend with the campus's signature vocabulary.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]...

McGowan Academic Center

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Capitol Technical University Laurel, Maryland   Named for a pioneer in the telecommunications industry, the William G. McGowan Academic Center at Capitol Technical University was built specifically to house cutting-edge academic programs. The most notable being the Space Operations Institute, built in partnership with NASA, to prepare students for careers in the space industry.   GBR Architects’ design embodies the high-tech nature of the facility. A metal fabric curtain clads the exterior to shade the sun and reduce glare for the interior lobby and second level study area. The fabric screen is divided into four equal horizontal panels to reflect the college’s four decades of service.  The structural steel exoskeleton serves both as an expression of the technology inside and to allow free circulation along the main building spine.  The exoskeleton also reduced the interior volume, resulting in lower costs to construct and to maintain.   The building was sited to create a true campus around a...

Cantwell and Ruesch Academic Center

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Gonzaga College High School Washington, DC   Founded in 1821, this prominent Jesuit high school commissioned GBR Architects to conduct a comprehensive update of its urban campus. The resulting master plan envisioned a series of renovations and additions to provide new academic space, to update technology, and to create a friendly, safe environment by unifying the campus landscape and creating connective spaces between buildings.   The initial phase of the campus update renovated two historic buildings that years ago had been acquired by Gonzaga: the 1903 Cantwell Hall (a former grade school), and the former Notre Dame Academy for Girls (now Ruesch Hall).  These buildings, with their main facades and street entrances fronting K Street NW and North Capital Street, had their backs turned to the Gonzaga campus on Eye Street. Back doors were used as cramped inlets with student foot traffic traversing an urban alley and in-between the cars of parking lot.   To resolve these...

Center for Sports and Fine Arts

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Elizabeth Seton High School Bladensburg, Maryland   Located in Bladensburg, Maryland, this Catholic high school for girls had outgrown its original 1959 school building. Of specific concern was the lack of space for the school’s extensive array of co-curricular programs. In particular, the original shared gym/auditorium could no longer effectively serve its dual use. Another key programmatic priority was proper rehearsal space for the school’s award winning music programs.   GBR Architects designed a new, stand-alone facility running parallel to the existing outdoor track and connecting to the existing school through a secure student circulation path. Careful siting of the building maintained an outdoor wooded buffer to the south and provided for new parking along a revised vehicular circulation route for student pick-up and drop-off. The new 26,000 sf building contains a 600-seat gymnasium with related support spaces (locker room, team room, weight room, multi-purpose space, athletic training room and athletic director’s office), a choral...

Butler Condominium

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] The Butler Family Silver Spring, Maryland Award for Excellence in Architecture, Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects   Repurposing of a 1500 sf art gallery attached to a LEED certified co-housing complex, GBR Architects created a flexible apartment for a family of five. The architecture organizes itself around a single, continuous header framed in exposed metal studs and sheathed in corrugated plastic. Openness, togetherness, sustainability and economy influence the attention to detail and material ingenuity.   The Butler’s sought a lifestyle that would allow more family time and a renewed sense of “living in community” with their children and their neighbors. A layer of transparency was developed between defined spaces by a continuous transom of ribbed acrylic glazing to allow light transfer from the exterior deep into the interior space. An over-sized, built-in table becomes the family magnet; serving multiple functions. Entire walls slide to conceal, offer access to or to completely open individual...
